South Summit dual language immersion students took their audience on a tour around the world recently. First through 5th grade students performed songs and dances from various Spanish-speaking countries. DLI students get to learn about different cultures throughout their years in the program. This end of year performance is an opportunity for them to show off their new knowledge and skills. #WeAreSouthSummit #SouthSummitMiddle #SSElemWildcats #DualImmersion

SSHS Alumni Alert! Mr. Lewis likes working with his hands, so starting in maintenance work right out of high school was a natural fit. He currently works as a custodian at South Summit Middle School and enjoys being part of the District. You can find Jeff outside doing pretty much anything, especially snowmobiling, side-by-siding, restoring his '66 Mustang and cooking on his Traeger. He also enjoys woodworking and oil painting. Spending time with his family is important too. He and his wife have two kids and three grandchildren. "I've been in Kamas Valley my whole life! And I really like this town and most of my family is here also." #WeAreSouthSummit #StaffShoutout #SouthSummitMiddle

In his life before school counseling, Mr. Carter taught 8th grade. He even taught here at South Summit Middle School for a few years before getting his degree in counseling. "School counseling was and is a great way to work with students individually and I really enjoy it. My favorite things about South Summit are the bright and kind students and the location of the schools. This is a unique and beautiful setting." Dave lives in Heber with his wife and four kids. Besides being out with them, he likes fixing up old Schwinn bicycles, fly fishing and hanging out with his dog. #WeAreSouthSummit #SSHSWildcats #StaffShoutout

Marci has loved sign language since she was a kid and remembers having deaf students in her class. She learned some signs so she could talk to them. She still remembers "Don't throw sand!" and "Let's go swing!" When she got to college she found that learning American Sign Language and working with hearing impaired students was a part of the speech program so she decided to go into speech. Thirty-three years later she still enjoys her job and says, "It is what I was supposed to do--I have never regretted my career path." Every year she has as many as 70 students on her caseload, all from South Summit Elementary School. She feels lucky to be able to collaborate with almost everyone at the elementary school and her students' parents. She works closely with the preschool team and school psychologist and is in daily contact with the teachers. The best part of her job is watching the kids progress over the years she says, "I like to think back to where a student started and see the gains they make within a few years." #WeAreSouthSummit #SSElemWildcats #SpeechLanguagePathologistDay

Nurse Amanda came to South Summit the year of Covid. Of course, she didn't know what was coming, none of us did. She says, "Nursing can be challenging but I love learning and being able to make a difference in people's lives." She also loves being able to work in the schools that her children attend and getting to know their friends. She has four kids who are involved in dance and soccer. Amanda and her family moved to the Kamas valley four years ago. They spend time exploring the outdoors, fishing and hiking. They feel lucky to live somewhere so beautiful with such great people. She says her favorite thing about South Summit is the community, "Everyone has been so kind and welcoming to our family. I love all of the small town traditions like homecoming week and the choreographed promenade dance for prom." Amanda also likes to read and paint. And she started and continues to volunteer at the Kamas Food Pantry every Wednesday behind the South Summit Elementary School. Thanks for being an amazing asset to our schools and community, Amanda. #WeAreSouthSummit #StaffShoutout #SchoolNurseAppreciationDay2023 #SND2023

After her cow visited her dining room for the day, Mrs. Lindgren decided she needed to focus a little more on her family and career and less on her farming efforts. Her career is basically her passion anyway. She's an Art Specialist at Silver Summit Elementary and she loves working there. "I really love working with Louise Willoughby, the teachers, staff and students at Silver Summit Elementary. The friendships and respect that are forged within this school are some of my favorite aspects of working here." Misty started working at Silver Summit when her youngest of five children began kindergarten. She and her husband have five children and have been living in the Kamas Valley for five years. They love the proximity to the Uintas and all the time in nature that it allows them to spend there. She enjoys camping and hiking, as well as singing, working out and of course, farming. #WeAreSouthSummit #StaffShoutout #SilverSummitElem

"I love being a lunch lady mostly because of the great ladies and people I work with. I have always been able to count on them in rough times. This is the best job for a mom. I loved being home when my kids were and having the summers together, " Brenda says. South Summit is her alma mater and she loves it. So when she got hired she was so happy and plans to finish out her career here. She loves the school, loves her gigs in the Lunch Lady Lunatic videos--can you tell? And, Brenda says she is proud to be from Kamas. Brenda is a mom of three boys and one girl and in her spare time she's usually babysitting her two grandsons (7 and 4) or hanging out with her sister Lori and friend Connie. This summer, watch for her long awaited performance in the Fiesta Days Melodrama! #WeAreSouthSummit #StaffShoutout #SouthSummitMiddle #SLHD23 #SchoolLunchHeroes

Mrs. Cook, our District Social Worker tells us that she sees anxiety show up in a variety of ways for our students including physical symptoms like chronic headaches and stomach aches, or chronic absenteeism, avoidance of things once loved, and loneliness. She notes that many of these concerns are direct effects from living through the Covid pandemic. "We were forced into isolation, which teens do not naturally cope well with, and now we expect them to face many things to which they have built up a resistance. These resistant habits grew over the space of at least two years, so undoing this through building new habits and mental models of functioning may take some time and patience. Learning strategies to manage anxiety and even learning to use it for our good is critical for all of us!" She believes as many as one in three students at South Summit are dealing with some sort of anxiety. For some it's crippling and preventing them from living their lives. For others it may not be as serious, but it is impacting their lives on a daily basis. We invite parents and students to join us for an evening focused on resiliency. Mental Health Counselor, Jeff Gregson, will present manageable ways to cope with anxiety. Plan to attend, it'll be an experience you won't forget. #WeAreSouthSummit #JeffGregson

As a convert to South Summit, Mrs. Earl grew up being one of the Wildcats biggest rivals: a Park City Miner. However, she now proudly admits that her heart belongs to South Summit. She and her family moved to Kamas 14 years ago and she's been teaching at South Summit Middle School for three years. "My favorite thing about South Summit, besides my students, is the feeling of community and a positive work environment with caring staff members," she says. When DeEtte isn't teaching sixth grade language arts and theater, she enjoys reading and playing the piano. She also loves to spend time with her husband, kids and grandkids. They like to go camping, riding their RZRs, hiking, boating, fishing, traveling and playing board games. #WeAreSouthSummit #SouthSummitMiddle #StaffShoutout #FootlooseTheMusical #FootlooseYouthEdition
