Congratulations to Tess, Neve and Gibson for earning the 2024 International Innovation Merit Award at the Real World Design Challenge (RWDC)! The RWDC is an annual competition that provides high school students, grades 9-12, the opportunity to work on real world engineering challenges in a team environment. Each year presents a new challenge that many of our nation's leading industries face.
This year the students were tasked with developing an uncrewed aircraft to support wildfire mitigation. Silver Summit Academy’s Engineering Capstone Class (aka Team Yeti ) competed against 21 state winning teams and national winners from around the world, including India, Pakistan and China. Their design, Inferno, won the 2024 International Innovation Merit Award.
If you're wondering why the world's engineering experts turn to high schoolers for help in solving today's tough issues? This is why.
The students' teacher, Mrs. Rydalch explained that the Inferno is unique because the students, "utilized a generator system for propulsion rather than a battery and used SATCOM to solve a whole host of communication challenges providing reliability and durability to meet mission needs.” SATCOM stands for Satellite Communications Datalink and allows aircraft to communicate with ground users like Air Traffic Control and other ground operations centers using voice or datalink recordings.
Mrs. Rydalch and all of South Summit School District is so proud of these students and we cannot wait to see what their future will bring.

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week and we can't thank our teachers enough. They love our students and our students love them back. It takes passion, dedication and a million other special skills that we don't even know about. Happy Teacher Appreciation Week to all of our teachers! #WeAreSouthSummit #TeacherAppreciationWeek24
Join us for our Technology Showcase on Monday, May 13th at the South Summit Middle School. You'll be amazed at the incredible things our students have developed this year.
Water bottles, coats and hats--oh my! Is your child missing their coat or hat? Or how about gloves or lunch box? Maybe now that you think about it, you haven't seen these things since Christmas time? Did they "borrow" your water bottle because they can't find theirs? Perhaps it's because they left it on the bus. Get your readers on, or take 'em off if that works better for you. Just make sure you can take a good peek at these pictures to see if anything looks familiar. There is quite a collection of lost and found items in the bus garage. If you recognize something that belongs to your child, you can pick it up at the bus garage. Someone is there most days between 1:30-4:30. If you need to come at a different time, you can call and schedule something that works better. 435-783-2373
Celebrating our school lunch heroes today! Thank you lunch lady lunatics! We love you! #SLHD24 #LunchLadyLunatics #WeAreSouthSummit #SchoolLunchRocks
Our 4th graders know him as Dayton Fry, the Science Guy, but we know Dayton as a semifinalist for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. By executive order of the President, the program was created sixty years ago to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. Dayton is one of eight Utah candidates, which have been narrowed down from 4,000 applicants, which will be narrowed down again to 161 final scholars. Not just anyone can apply, it's by invitation only. Mrs. Regan nominated Dayton earlier this year and they began the intensive application process soon after. Dayton will find out later this month if his semifinalist status changes to finalist when they announce the official U.S. Presidential Scholars for 2024. Official or not, Dayton is an incredible scholar, person and athlete. We are proud to have him represent South Summit and Utah. #WeAreSouthSummit #SSHSWildcats #PresidentialScholar
