Another survey! Full Link: https://usbe.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6y7Q8gzAlA701ka The Utah State Board of Education (USBE) Standards and Assessment Committee has developed a draft document entitled, “Gender Identity Guidance for Utah Public Education.” The document is intended to guide Utah schools in their effort to provide access to an educational environment that is safe, conducive to the learning process, and free from unnecessary disruption. The Board values educational equity, which includes the distribution of resources to provide equal opportunities based upon the needs of each individual student. Equitable resources include: Funding Programs, policies, and initiatives Support that recognizes each student’s unique background and school context to guarantee that all students have access to high-quality education. To ensure that the voices of all Utah communities are heard, USBE is seeking public feedback through participation in an online survey. The survey allows members of the public to review and provide feedback on each section of the draft document prior to the document being finalized. Public feedback will be reviewed at an upcoming Standards and Assessment Committee meeting to be held on February 23. The online survey will be open until Monday, February 7 at 5 p.m. MST. USBE will continue to offer opportunities for public engagement with this issue going forward.

The Utah State Board of Education (USBE) and the Utah State Legislature are partnering to reexamine the state’s school accountability system. The current Utah School Accountability System was established through Senate Bill 220 during the 2017 legislative session, prior to the advancement of the Personalized, Competency-Based Learning and Portrait of a Graduate initiatives. The pandemic has highlighted the dependency of the school accountability system on access to state assessment results. The state is seeking to build a new accountability system to be: Inclusive of the additional initiatives More comprehensive in evaluation criteria Aligned with and supportive of continuous school improvement efforts for all schools For this work to be successful, the state needs to hear from the public on the information needed to better understand school quality. USBE is asking interested members of the public to take a 10-minute, online survey to provide input on the future of school accountability in Utah. The survey will be open until February 18, 2022. USBE will offer both virtual and in-person opportunities to engage further along in the process.

Lynda Whitmore is on her second year serving with the School Board and she loves seeing the student success that comes with being a Board Member. She recognizes that we live in a great place with many wonderful experiences but it takes all of us to be involved to make it a success. That's one of the reasons she wanted to serve on the School Board. #wearesouthsummit #schoolboardrecognitionmonth

As our veteran member, Steven Hardman has been serving on the School Board for 11 years. He chose to run because he wanted everyone to be treated the same and for all to be held to the same standard. He still fights for those values today. #wearesouthsummit #schoolboardrecognitionmonth

School Board meeting
Today, January 6, the Summit County Health Officer (Dr. Philip Bondurant) and the Summit County Manager (Thomas Fisher) issued a public health order for individuals in Summit County. Specifically, the order requires all individuals to wear masks while indoors beginning January 7, 2022. This order includes, but is not limited to, indoor facilities such as grocery stores, movie theaters, restaurants, schools, etc. This Order begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, January 7, 2022 and is currently in effect until 5 p.m. on February 21, 2022. Tomorrow, January 7, 2022 all South Summit School District buildings will comply with the Public Health Order as issued by the Summit County Health Department. As you may know, House Bill 294 eliminated all past mask mandates and withdrew the State Health Department’s power to authorize any such future mandates. That authority was given instead, to local government agencies; in our case, both the Summit County Health Department and the Summit County legislative body. The complete Order and a full list of exemptions can be found at https://bit.ly/2022-01.

The Summit County Health Department issued a formal public health advisory regarding the record-breaking transmission of the COVID-19 Omicron variant. The advisory (in effect through January 31st) strongly encourages people to engage in several precautions known to be effective in preventing the spread of COVID: Wear a face mask, regardless of vaccination status, whenever indoors in public. Masks should always cover the nose and mouth. Stay home if they are exhibiting any symptoms of illness—regardless of vaccination status or past infection—and get tested for COVID. Follow current guidance on isolation and quarantine. Get vaccinated and (if eligible) boosted. Avoid all large gatherings if they are not vaccinated and (if applicable) boosted.
